On 29th May 2022, retired geography teacher and Quest for Education trustee Nick O’Sullivan took on an incredible challenge to support the education of underprivileged children in Kashmir, Pakistan. Joined by his daughter, Rebecca, and friend, Duncan Corp, Nick cycled approximately 53 miles from London’s Olympic Park in Stratford to Cambridge Central Mosque, raising nearly £5,000 for Quest for Education Foundation.
The journey was not just about endurance—it was about making a difference. Quest for Education is dedicated to providing high-quality education to some of the world’s poorest communities, with a strong focus on ensuring that at least 51% of student places go to girls, helping to break cycles of poverty and provide opportunities for a brighter future.
Nick, who previously taught in Barking and Ilford, reflected on the importance of the cause:
“The aim of the charity is to provide a world-class education for some of the poorest children in rural areas of Kashmir. Given the precarious political situation in the area, it is imperative to provide children of both genders with access to quality education. Many of our students have gone on to study at prestigious universities both within Pakistan and worldwide. It’s about breaking the cycle of poverty.”
Supported by fellow trustees and well-wishers, the cycling team set off from Stratford and made their way through the picturesque Hertfordshire and Essex countryside. Despite facing strong headwinds along the route, they arrived at Cambridge Central Mosque shortly after 7 pm to a warm welcome and a delicious home-cooked Pakistani meal, prepared by one of the trustees.
The event was not only a physical challenge but also an emotional and rewarding experience. Upon arrival in Cambridge, Nick unexpectedly reunited with a former student from Valentines High School, Aravindhan Moasikeeran, now a university student and IT professional. The serendipitous meeting was a reminder of the lasting impact of education and mentorship.
Nick expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported the event:
“The bike ride was a tremendous success. It was a challenge, but we felt a great sense of achievement that we’ve done something worthwhile for a good cause. I’m really satisfied with what we’ve accomplished, and I’m very thankful to everybody who contributed.”
The 2022 London to Cambridge Bike Ride was a resounding success, raising vital funds that will directly benefit students and teachers in Kashmir. Quest for Education Foundation hopes to make this an annual event, continuing to raise awareness and support for the transformative power of education.
If you’d like to contribute to this important cause, it’s not too late to donate!
